Thinking about breast implants but unsure if the time is right? That’s one of the most searched cosmetic surgery questions for good reason, as breast augmentation is second only to liposuction as America’s most popular cosmetic surgery.
Several factors come into play when choosing the best time for breast implants, and Dr. Giancarlo McEvenue (our patients fondly call him Dr. G) is here to help you understand those considerations and get the breasts you’ve always wanted.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon in both the U.S. and Canada, he blends artistry and years of experience to deliver natural, long-lasting results. With his signature “Resultado Excelente™” and clinic-wide focus on one patient at a time, you’re never just a number here.
The breast augmentation journey begins with your personalized consultation with Dr. G. It’s the perfect opportunity to discuss surgery timing.
Age Considerations For Breast Augmentation
Legally, you need to be 18 or older for saline breast implants (and age 22 for silicone.) But physically, the right age can vary. Dr. G considers your breast development, emotional readiness, and goals. If you’re still growing or unsure about your long-term body image, it may be better to wait.
Most patients are well over the minimum age, though. Women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s get breast augmentation all the time. In fact, about 66% of breast augmentation patients are 30-54 years old.
There’s also no upper age limit. You can even have breast augmentation in your golden years. It’s never too late for body-positive changes!
Other Important Timing Considerations
Dr. G looks at many timing factors beyond your age, including:
- Time off: Can you take time off (usually a few weeks) to recover? You’ll have restrictions on lifting and reaching, so your time off must include assistance with tasks such as household chores and childcare.
- Family plans: If you’re planning future pregnancies, Dr. G may recommend waiting until your family is complete. Future pregnancies can affect the appearance of your implants.
- Breastfeeding: It’s generally best to wait at least 6-12 months after you stop breastfeeding to allow your breast tissue to stabilize before surgery.
- Major life events: If you’re planning breast augmentation before a major life event like a wedding or a family trip to Europe, it’s best to plan surgery at least six weeks (or more) ahead of that to ensure you’re ready to enjoy the event to the utmost.
Dr. G takes the time to answer your questions and help you decide the right time for you. When you’re ready to move ahead with surgery, you can rest assured you’re in the best hands. Dr. G performs only two surgeries per day to ensure full focus, safety, and support.
